Beware: it's Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832) who is known as 'the father of utilitarianism', but he never published a work with this title. In fact he never published very much at all. In Bentham's day his ideas were known as Benthamism; he did use the word "utilitarian", but it was John Stuart Mill who coined the word "utilitarianism". Mill was a student of Bentham's – his father was Bentham's secretary and collaborator.
